I love music and I enjoy watching good singers singing their hearts out and belting so powerfully. It gives me shivers and even makes me weep in admiration.
Here is my top 10 list of Filipino greatest singers of this generation. Regine Velasquez and Jaya aren’t included here (and the rest of the older singers who made history) because they are undeniably great. I am so dearly sorry to the fans of Angeline Quinto because I do not personally like her style, if that’s what you call hers, since she sounds too much like Regine. It is very important to have someone to look up to but once you’re in the mainstream, you have to have your own signature style. So when one hears you sing, they’ll know “Ah it’s Angeline.” But when people hear her sing, people just hear Regine. She even does Regine’s make up. She has a good voice, that’s out of the question, but style must be taken into account.
By the way, this is in random order.
Sarah Geronimo
Julie Anne San Jose
La Diva – Aicelle Santos, Jonalyn Viray, and Maricris Garcia
Perhaps you were wondering where the heck was Day 30? I was supposed to post it yesterday. But I was still trying to remember what song I liked this time last year. When I woke up this morning, it dawned on me.
This time last year, I had been frequently listening to a bunch of songs that made me fall in love more with my Starlight. Songs that were and are connected somehow to our relationship.
Some of the songs were his favorite, some we talked about, some we heard another person sing when we were together, and some we sang together.
The song I’m posting now is something from The Flys. I first heard it I guess I was in my elementary or high school when my brother was listening to the radio. Then last year, when Starlight and I were at his friend’s place, they were were drinking while singing and playing the guitar and the Cuban box drum also known as the Cajon. One of his friends played and sang it and I kind of connected it to how I felt about having him with me.

Day 30: Your Favorite Song This Time Last Year — Got You Where I Want You (The Flys)
“Hey what’s the point of this
Hey what’s your favorite song
Maybe we could hum along
I think you’re smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your name
I’m dying here
Ooh got you where I want you
Ooh got you where I want you
Oh yeah
Hey maybe just a smile
Oh hey do you know that I can dance
Could we talk for a while
I think you’re smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your sign
I’m dying here
Ooh got you where I want you
Ooh got you where I want you
Oh yea
Ooh got you where I want you
I want you bad
I think you’re smart
You sweet thing
Tell me your name
I’m dying here
Ooh got you where I want you
Got you where I want you
YEAH
Got you where I want you
I want you
Want You
Got you where I want you
Walking around
screaming at you in my head,
“Please find me!”
Then you did,
driving around El Paso together…
looking for that head shop…”
One of the hardest struggles a person has is being true to themselves. A lot of people act differently. They act like someone who they’d like to be, but it’s someone who they are not and can never be.
They talk about things that they really don’t have… Things that they only heard from other people… Things that they really want to have but don’t have.
They know their weaknesses and flaws, and these trigger them to pretend to be someone they’re not.
They’re too scared to let people know their real situation because they think people will stay away from them if others find out.
They seem so strong and satisfied with the lies and stories that they make up. But in reality, their real struggle is accepting the “painful” truth.
I used to feel embarrassed when I didn’t have the cool toys my classmates had or when I had not gone to places my friends had. I used to call my Nanay “Mama” when I was in Preparatory when all my other classmates were around. I thought Nanay was for poor people only. We were not that poor, but we were not that rich. We weren’t even average. Perhaps, we were below-average.
I used to have insecurities, too. But I did not come to the point of making up stories just to look cool to others. When I reached my Sophomore year in high school, I learned that being true to myself would make me feel comfortable with myself. It made me love myself. It made me embrace my strengths and weaknesses.
This song tells us the importance of knowing and accepting who we really are. Jessie J reminds us that we are not alone and that everybody has the same struggle.
Listen to this and enjoy~
Who You Are — Jessie J
Kyla’s Version
(Kyla is a Filipina singer and is called the RnB Princess.)
“I stare at my reflection in the mirror: “Why am I doing this to myself?” Losing my mind on a tiny error, I nearly left the real me on the shelf. No, no, no, no, no…
Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars! Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing, It’s okay not to be okay. Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart. Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising, There’s nothing wrong with who you are! (who you are)
Brushing my hair, do I look perfect? I forgot what to do to fit the mold, yeah! The more I try the less it’s working, yeah ‘Cause everything inside me screams No, no, no, no, no…
Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars! Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing, It’s okay not to be okay. Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart. But tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising, There’s nothing wrong with who you are!
Yes, no’s, egos, fake shows, like WHOA! Just go, and leave me alone! Real talk, real life, good love, goodnight, With a smile, that’s my home! That’s my home, no…
No, no, no, no, no… Don’t lose who you are in the blur of the stars! Seeing is deceiving, dreaming is believing, It’s okay not to be okay… Sometimes it’s hard to follow your heart. Tears don’t mean you’re losing, everybody’s bruising, Just be true to who you are! Yeah yeah yeah”
Wondering where Day 28 is? Quit wondering. I didn’t really post for yesterday’s song because it was asking me about a ‘song that makes me feel guilty’. I had two thoughts on that: (1) No song makes me feel guilty; and (2) Is it the same with Day 13, which said “A Song That Is A Guilty Pleasure?” If it is the latter, then I don’t think it is necessary anymore.
So here I am on my 29th day. Time’s fast, ain’t it?
You know that as kids, we used to love a song that we sang almost every single minute of every day. It would be something that we might have heard on the radio, or in a movie, or on TV. And no matter how we messed up with the lyrics, we just seemed to enjoy singing it like forever. Our parents would just say “Wow! My kid will be a singer! haha!” as they clap their hands frantically.
I’ve loved to sing since I was a kid and my father often bought me multiplex cassette tapes to sing along with. I sang along with both foreign and local singers such as Gloria Estefan, Manilyn Reynes and Ted Ito.
But there was this one song that I frequently sang while playing, running here and there, taking a bath, or doing nothing. It was from the animated movie An American Tail.
I can still remember how sad I felt while watching it. I can’t remember exactly what the story was about but I just remember the feeling I had then.
Day 29: A Song From Your Childhood — Somewhere Out There (An American Tail OST)
Knowing how to play a musical instrument is cool. I once tried to learn how to play the guitar but my fingers were not equipped for the instrument. I also tried to learn the piano, but still my little finger and my thumb could not reach two octaves (if that’s what you call it).
If I only knew how to play the guitar, one of the songs that I would like to play is something from Alanis Morissette. Her songs are really powerful and I guess it would be cool to jam with a guitar.
Day 27: A Song That You Wish You Could Play — You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette)
When I was in fifth grade, my father bought a bamboo flute for me. He just saw it while we were at a mall and found it interesting. He thought I should at least learn to play one instrument and the bamboo flute seemed easy to learn.
Yeah, it was easy and the instructions weren’t hard to understand. I first practiced the songs that were on the manual and when I was able to play them all, my father bought a new song book for me.
I had three song books to practice with but when I grew a bit tired of playing the same songs over and over, I tried to learn the notes by myself.
Sadly, I don’t have my bamboo flute anymore. But I have never forgotten how to play it. If I have a bamboo flute now, I can play any song as long as there are notes written already.
Day 26: A Song That You Can (or rather, COULD) Play On An Instrument — My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion)
(Disclaimer: I wasn’t the one playing in the video. But this is how the song sounds like when played on a bamboo flute.)
Wow.. The previous post was a bit depressing. So to take away our sadness, here’s something to make you laugh.
It’s from a novelty singer who became known in the 70s. If you ask all the Filipinos that you know, they might know this song. (Well, I doubt modern kids know anything about this.)
Here, have a good laugh at this funny song with Chinese-sounding lyrics (but none of the words are really Chinese.)
Day 25: A Song That Makes You Laugh — Butsekik (Yoyoy Villame)
